A positron emission tomography (PET) scan is a diagnostic imaging procedure that uses a special dye that contains radioactive tracers. This dye is either swallowed, injected, or inhaled, and then images are taken to identify disease and study organ function, blood flow, or oxygen and sugar use. PET scans are particularly useful in the diagnosis and staging of certain types of cancers and heart disorders.
